Restless Taxis is a DIY queer and POC-led band formed in East London in 2019. The band name comes from two english worksheets featuring tables of different words Michael picked out in year 9.
The band’s lineup features Michael Asukyle (vocals, guitar), Jess Nwosu (vocals, bass), Dylan on drums, and Tash (guitar) whose interpretive dance adds a visual dimension to their already immersive performances.
After forming in 2019, the band went through multiple lineup changes, with Michael Asukyle as the sole founding member, meeting drummer Dylan Haynes and bassist Jess Nwosu at East London Arts and Music. Throughout the years, the band’s sound has progressed from a scuzzy blend of sub pop sludge with ambient overtones into a frenetic experience blending influences from london’s squat rave scene with J Mascis’ grunge Van Halen guitar heroism and A.R. Kane’s crooning psychedelia.
The band has maintained a DIY ethos, pioneering a blend of 90s rock with rave culture through their first event, restless basslines, which took place in Edgware Road underpass on 1st Apr. 2023. They blend UK sound system culture with Dean Blunt’s conception of the Post-black male, infusing their Caribbean heritage to create a sound unique to them. Michael coined the term “post-yardie” to encapsulate the unique blend of maximalist uk rave and emo/scene cultures with caribbean soundsystem and dancehall/ reggae cultures that make up Michael and Dylan’s heritage.
The band became a part of the East London Fuzzbrain community after Michael met Fuzzbrain’s founder Ben Spence in 2021. Fuzzbrain studios is an important beacon for the underground music scene in East London, empowering marginalised voices in particular through the hoodstock fund which allows free studio time in Fuzzbrain studios, walthamstow to musicians ages 16-25.
Through this fund, the band was able to record their first single in years in a studio, as opposed to the shed recordings featured on 2023’s Swan EP. their new single, SLugs, is set to release on Thursday July 10th, and it’s an old song written in 2022 which was recorded after Jess added a verse to it.
Produced independently by Michael Asukyle in his bedroom using FL Studio.
The band is moving forward after it’s lineup has solidified in a sense, and is making plans to explore and develop their world in an audiovisual sense, as Michael Asukyle creates warped music videos and visualisers in his bedroom. The Slugs music video is also set to release on Restlesstaxis’ youtube account on the same day.
